Great news!!! I've had the flu!

I was very ill over the past week and am recovering from either the flu or a really bad cold. The reason this is good news is that I seem to have kind of broken some bad eating habits. Over the past week, I've lost about 8 lbs. too.

Now I'm not naive enough to think that this is the norm in just a week but I am still encouraged that this is the only weight loss I've experienced in many months. So, I want to keep it off and continue to lose more.

My walking regimen has been going so-so. The great thing is that my ankle has felt pretty well. I'm soooooooo weak, though and am going to be very careful building back all the musculoskeletal structure that has not been used in sooo long. I'm walking about 25 minutes at at time now so that's good.

I need to get such more serious about my fitness but am starting to have a better attitude and starting to get more and more motivated.

Started a walking regimen!!

I started a walking program this week and thought I would start posting my progress. First of all, let me show you the program. It can be found at this web site. It is a 12-week, complete beginner program. My hope is that one day, at about mile 20 of my first marathon, I'll be able to think back to the day I started by walking 15 minutes. Man, this really king of takes starting out slowly to a whole new level but I think given my recent weight gain (about 35 lbs.) and my not so recent ankle surgery/recovery, this is the way to go.

Regarding weight loss, I am continuing to struggle with my diet. It really is just a concious decision. Of course, it was easier when I was working out like a dog but since my running is ix-nay, I MUST cut my calories drastically to be a big loser. Wifey-poo has made a recent commitment to join me with helping the family eat better so that will make a big difference.

So, here are the stats today.

Walk: 15 minutes. Stretching: 2 min before/none after (must do better)

SOOOOOO Sorry!!!

I am so very sorry to have dropped off the face of the earth the last month and a half (or more). My sincerest apologies for my rudeness and for ignoring my friends and awesome running community! And thanks so much for checking up on me Cassie and Edwin. Every day, I just kept saying to myself that I was going to get back with you tomorrow but that never happened. I'm sorry.

Good news and bad. More good than bad so I'll start with the good. In a nutshell, I got a new car, started a new dream job, bought a new house, moved into my new house, and am living the American dream. Soooo, where to start?... well guess I'll post some pics of the new house. Here ya go.

It's awesome. The only bad thing about it is that it's pretty far out 290 in Fairfield. But we absolutely love the community and it's worth the long drive in every day. It's actually closer to where J works than where we lived before. And the kids love it.

I got a new car to replace the inferno. I got a great deal from my cousin who is part owner of a dealership in Liberty, TX. It's a Grand Marquis. I know, I know. My wife says it's an old person's car but I love the ride and the price was right.

I started my new job as a Clinical Application Analyst. I'm now in my 3rd week and have sooo much to learn. My boss says it will take me 2 years to learn everything I need to learn. WOW!!! That's job security. Anyway, I love it. It's what I've wanted to do for a long time now. I've been pursuing this job for about 5 years and have finally been blessed with a new career.

Running out of time so I'll make the bad news brief. I've gained about 35 lbs. Haven't run now since May. The ankle is still very stiff but not sore. I think it's still healing and getting stronger. As my life settles down a bit, I'm going to get back the exercise regimen. It's been a stressful couple of months.

Again, I'm sorry for my neglect and look forward to getting back in touch. Later!

WARNING!!!

I've had a couple of friends tell me that they have F-150's that are affected by the recall. All I can say is GET IT TAKE CARE OF IMMEDIATELY!!!

I've never been one to take recalls very seriously. I always think I'll just get it taken care of the next time it's in the shop. Well, the pictures below speak to me and should yell to all others out there. TAKE IT IN!!!

Most importantly, until you can get into the shop to get it taken care of, DO NOT park your truck near your house or near your other vehicles. This fire did not happen while the truck was running. I was in someone's house for almost 1.5 hours before it spontaneously ignited. And by the time I got out to the street, it was already engulfed in flames

Finally, don't keep any valuables in your truck, just in case

Here's what happened....

Some friends and I signed up for a cooking class on Saturday morning through Leisure Learning Unlimited. I arrived at the class on time at 9 AM. The class was at a woman's house so we were all parked in the street around her house in this residential area. At around 10:15, someone was banging on the window yelling, "Someone's truck in on fire!" We all ran out and it was my truck that was on fire. It just spontaneously burst into flames.

Yes, Lisa, this was one of the Ford trucks that was affected by the recall. I was taking off work this week and this was one of the things I was going to take care of. (I also needed new tires but I guess I won't have to bother with that this week.

No one was hurt. The only thing of value that was in the truck was about $7,000 worth of software that a friend of mine had given me...stuff he was no longer using...development stuff. Also some books, a shirt, a child seat, a coffee cup...really no big deal

Hopefully my insurance company will pay me the value of the car and I'll be looking for something else soon.

Sorry I missed the marathon, but...

Well, my plan was to be on hand to cheer all my HRB buds on but something kinda happened on Saturday that threw a wrench in my plan. Rather than try to explain with words what happened, I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

Well, that's my ride. Enough said.

Great news!!!

Many of you may not know this about me but for about 4 years now, I have been intent on breaking into the healthcare informatics field. I've worked in a hopital laboratory now for about 15 years and became interested some years ago in how technology can be used in healthcare to save money, reduce medical errors, and save lives. I went back to school about 3 years ago and have been working on my BS in computer science, all the while attending conferences, meeting people, learning all I can about the field.

Well, all my hard work had unbeliveably paid off as I just received my first job offer in my new career last friday. My new position is Clinical Applications Analyst and it's with the same company I currently work with. The money is a whole lot better but more importatly, it's doing something I love to do.

Now that all the initial excitement has subsided a bit, it's a bit surreal to be changing careers. As I said, I've been doing the same thing for about 15 years now so to totally switch careers, although it's exactly what I've been working towards, is a tad bit scary. I'm soooooo ready though!

Thanks to my family for helping me get here. It's been a tough road, going to school, working odd shifts, going to conferences. Also, thanks to God for giving me this opportunity.

I start the first of February!!!

Long overdue!!!

To start off, let me say that my ankle recovery and my fitness in general have not progressed as I had hoped. A week or so ago, I posted a little about my frustration as well as a plan for getting out of this funk on HRB.com. I wanted to post the plan (not the frustration) here on my blog, too. Rather than a 1, 2, 3 step-by-step plan, I've set this up as a list of priorities. Here they are:

  1. When I first started this list, this #1 priority was relegated to the end of my list. I had to put it back at the top. My #1 priority is to get my spiritual life in order. I know there are a lot of views out there and I'm not one to push my faith on anyone but as a matter of record, I must state here that without God, I can do nothing. Health and fitness are spiritual issues for me. For me, health and fitness allow me to serve my God, my family, and my community in a way that's just not possible in my current condition. So, I must 're-connect' to the Source of my strength and my discipline and my inspiriation.
  2. Secondly, I MUST decrease the pressure and stress that I put on my ankle with each step. In other words, I've gotta lose this weight. I was reading that lbs/foot pressure increase exponentially with total body mass. If that's the case, then it should also decrease just as fast. I think this is the number one reason that my ankle has not healed. I'm not making excuses but it's kind of a catch-22 for me. I need to exercise to lose weight but I can't exercise because my weight keeps my ankle from healing properly. I am going to have to figure out and implement a strict weightloss regimen that frankly does not include running or walking. This will require even more discipline and planning. I can't splurge and then go out and run 6 miles like I could last winter. I'm going to have to work.
  3. I need strength. The muscles that hold my ankle together and the muscles that support those muscles are in bad, bad shape. So, exercise-wise, I am going to start a 12-16 week concentrated strength training program. I dont' know what or where or how but I think this is a priorty that will get be me back to running with a good foundation.
  4. I need flexibility. I MUST start back to stretching. Tight muscles don't help my gait and posture and in turn probably do more harm to my ankle.
  5. I must re-engage my awesome community (Striders, HRB'ers, family). I've gotta get back on the blogs and boards and stay inspired. Most of all, I want to chronicle this comeback for others to draw on.
  6. Lastly, and this may be the hardest. I'M NOT GOING TO RUN AT ALL!!! Until further notice, running is off-limits. I've got to break the cycle of 'well, I feel a little better... I think I'll go run...injury...take time off...feel a little better...I think I'll run...injury...take time off...' You all know the drill. Patience, patience, patience!!! I think if I take care of 1-5, I'll be ready to come back strong in April or May. Will that put me in a position for Houston '07? I don't know. I hope it does but I've got to do this first. And if I have to put my first marathon off 'till later in spring '07 or fall '07, sobeit.

Updates to follow!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

"Although the time and date of the first American thanksgiving observance may be uncertain, there is no question but that this treasured custom derives from our Judeo-Christian heritage. "Unto Thee, O God, do we give thanks," the Psalmist sang, praising God not only for the "wondrous works" of His creation, but for loving guidance and deliverance from dangers.

A band of settlers arriving in Maine in 1607 held a service of thanks for their safe journey, and twelve years later settlers in Virginia set aside a day of thanksgiving for their survival. In 1621 Governor William Bradford created the most famous of all such observances at Plymouth Colony when a bounteous harvest prompted him to proclaim a special day "to render thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings." The Spaniards in California and the Dutch in New Amsterdam also held services to give public thanks to God.

In 1777, during our War of Independence, the Continental Congress set aside a day for thanksgiving and praise for our victory at the battle of Saratoga. It was the first time all the colonies took part in such an event on the same day. The following year, upon news that France was coming to our aid, George Washington at Valley Forge prescribed a special day of thanksgiving. Later, as our first President, he responded to a Congressional petition by declaring Thursday, November 26, 1789, the first Thanksgiving Day of the United States of America.

Although there were many state and national thanksgiving days proclaimed in the ensuing years, it was the tireless crusade of one woman, Sarah Josepha Hale, that finally led to the establishment of this beautiful feast as an annual nationwide observance. Her editorials so touched the heart of Abraham Lincoln that in 1863 - even in the midst of the civil War - he enjoined his countrymen to be mindful of their many blessings, cautioning them not to forget "the source from which they come," that they are "the gracious gifts of the Most High God…" Who ought to be thanked "with one heart and one voice by the whole American People."

It is in that spirit that I now invite all Americans to take part again in this beautiful tradition with its roots deep in our history and deeper still in our hearts. We manifest our gratitude to God for the many blessings he has showered upon our land and upon its people.

In this season of Thanksgiving we are grateful for our abundant harvests and the productivity of our industries; for the discoveries of our laboratories; for the researches of our scientists and scholars; for the achievements of our artists, musicians, writers, clergy, teachers, physicians, businessmen, engineers, public servants, farmers, mechanics, artisans, and workers of every sort whose honest toil of mind and body in a free land rewards them and their families and enriches our entire Nation.

Let us thank God for our families, friends, and neighbors, and for the joy of this very festival we celebrate in His name. Let every house of worship in the land and every home and every heart be filled with the spirit of gratitude and praise and love on this Thanksgiving Day."

Nutrition, 11/8 - 11/10

Having lost (much to my surprise) about 17 lbs. in the last month and a half, I think I'm going to start recording my meals/snacks again, just to have a record of what I'm doing to lose the weight. As I stated in an earlier post I'm not following any particular diet, per se. I'm just confining my nutrition to Weight Watcher's list of core foods which include lean meats, eggs, lowfat dairy, fruits and vegetables, whole grains. As I mentioned, this is no magic thing. No pills or magic formulas. I'm just trying to choose healthy foods and limit my intake to what satiates me.

Tuesday 11/8

4:00pm (meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
1 egg
3 slices of canadian bacon
small bowl of Whole Oat O's (from Whole Foods)
skim milk
Comfort Zone (after): 4

8:00pm(meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 3
small ribeye steak
salad
tomato
fat free Ranch
Comfort Zone (after): 4
Ribeye's not the best cut of steak for me but that's what I had in the freezer. No harm done

Tuesday 11/8

1:30am(meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 1
chicken parmesan
spinach pasta
broccoli
Comfort Zone (after): 4

7:45am(meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
blueberry parfait with:
blueberries
granola
yogurt
Not the best meal but it was the best they served at UHD cafeteria. I'm sure the yogurt was not lowfat and there was probably a lot of sugar in the granola. Still, I'll be ok. It was better than eating nothing at all and gorging when I finally got home.

4:30pm(meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
Whole Oat O's
Skim milk
3 slices of canadian bacon
Comfort Zone (after): 4

Thursday 11/10

12:30am (meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
breadless turkey sandwich
little bit of cole slaw
Comfort Zone (after): 4

7:00am (meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
apple
Comfort Zone (after): 3

4:30pm (meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
Whole Oat O's cereal
skim milk
Comfort Zone (after): 3

7:00pm (meal)
Comfort Zone (before): 2
salad:
   lettuce
   tomato
   chicken breast
   low-carb ranch (just a little)
2 pieces of fried chicken
OOPS!!! J brought fried chicken home for everyone. That's my weakness. It's so hard to eat right when the rest of your family eats wrong! little bit of cole slaw
Comfort Zone (after): 4

Cross-training day

For really the first time since I got my new bike, I went for an actual training ride today. No kids. No recreation. Just a straght-up cross-training workout. Very nice ride. I did 5.5 miles. That may not seem like a lot but it is not a road bike. Mine is a mountain bike with those knobby tires. Very slow. Not sure how long the ride took. I forgot to time it. Riding this morning frees me up this evening to study for my test tomorrow. Wish me luck!!!

I hate to mention it but my ankle feels great!!! Also, I've lost about 17 lbs. in the last 5 or 7 weeks. I think I deserve a massage. Maybe Friday.

Out of touch for a few!!!

Thanks to my wonderful wife, I've been out of the rat-race for the last few days as we took a weekend away to ourselves, just us, no kids!!! We stayed in a lovely B&B in Fredericksburg and had an awesome time

I've got a lot of catching up to do, not the least of which is all the weekend running activities. New York City Marathon snuck up on me and I'm anxious to read all about how the bloggers did. Also, I'm looking forwart to reading all theRun with the Saints reports.

For now, I'll just post the stats from my workout today. All is well with the ankle and I've been able to follow my training plan so far without a hitch.

Monday 11/7:
Format: 5x(3R/1W)
Distance: 1.3 miles
Time: 20 minutes

Tomorrow is a rest day but I think I'll try to get a bike ride in. Wednesday I 'graduate' to 3x(6R/1W). Looking ahead (maybe not the best thing to do) to 2 weeks from now, I'll be doing my first 2 mile continuous run in 'I-dunno-how-long'. I'm actually right on perfect track for the Houston Running Bloggers/Run the Woodlands 5K. I will have two 3-mile runs under my belt by then. Hope everyone's still there when I finish. LOL!!!

Weekend get-away

So sorry to just throw a photo up with no explanation. J and I got away BY OURSELVES!!! for the weekend. This is an early morning photo from the porch of the B&B that we stayed at in Fredericksburg. The B&B was actually on a little animal farm/game preserve. These little donkeys came by Saturday and Sunday morning to get some bread. We had a wonderful weekend to ourselves but missed the kids a lot. I did a lot of walking and even some bike riding on Saturday morning before J got stirring. It was a fantastic time.

Cassie, J and I were cracking up at your comment. You were the only one brave enough to ask what in the world that was!!! LOL

Nice Run Today

Memorial park tonight was like the Marine Corps Marathon as described by lisaleese and Doug Spence. Tons of people. No parking. Lotsa weaving. I got lucky and snagged a place right in front of the tennis center.

Not much remarkable on the run tonight. I felt strong and the ankle did fine. I woke up today with this excruciating cramp in the front of my left ankle/foot (the good one). It still hurts tonight. It was like a backwards charlie horse. Wierd. I couldn't get it to stop. I can usually stretch a calf cram out but I just sat there unable to do a thing. I wanted to walk to the kitchen to get some fluids but couldn't. I just laid there in bed till it ran it's course. I hope that doesn't happen again. More fluids at work tonight are in order.

Stats:
Distance: 1.36 miles, 10x(1R/1W)
Time: 20 min (14:42 pace. Could that be right?)
Temp: ~60 F
